Best of
the Fest -- Picks for the Closing Weekend of the San
Francisco Independent Film Festival
With over 43 featured films and many world premieres,
the 8th Annual San Francisco Independent Film Festival
can seem overwhelming to the casual film fan –
but it isn't, really. If you're looking for something
off the beaten path, head down to the Mission and check
out some of these films from the Festival's closing
weekend:
Smok'd (The Roxie, Thurs. Feb. 9 at 9:30 pm; Sat. Feb.
11 at 12:00 pm)
Set and shot in San Francisco, this gritty crime thriller
promises blood, guts and flying lead – all in
your hometown! As a dysfunctional couple try to make
it out of trouble alive, they find the streets of the
city are a dangerous place to be. …
Subject Two (The Women's Building, Sat. Feb. 11 at
7:00 pm)
Shot on High-Definition video, this dark horror-satire
just premiered at Sundance. A young man gets a (literally)
killer job with the famous Dr. Vick … and is murdered
and resurrected over and over again as Vick tries to
unravel the mysteries of eternal life in a high-tech
take on the Frankenstein story.
Sidekick
(The Roxie, Thurs. Feb. 9 at 4:30 pm; Sat. Feb. 11 at
4:30 pm)
This Canadian low-budget indie
is a smart, twisted take on superhero flicks and comic-book
culture … and Hollywood's already brought the
remake rights, so see it now to have bragging rights
in about two years. …
A/K/A Tommy Chong (The Women's Building, Sat. Feb.
11 at 12:00 pm)
When the War on Drugs goes hunting for the makers and
sellers of 'paraphernalia,' '60s comedy titan Tommy
Chong does time for making bongs – and, just maybe,
for being a pop-culture stoner icon. A/K/A Tommy Chong
offers a light and fun look at some serious issues of
individual liberty and media responsibility.
Waterborne (The Roxie, Fri. Feb. 10 at 2:15 pm, Women's
Building Sat. Feb. 11 at 9:30 pm)
You don't need a million-dollar budget to be smart
– as this claustrophobic, low-budget thriller
proves. When L.A.'s water supply is contaminated as
part of a terrorist attack, civilized society falls
apart – fast – as desperate people do whatever
they can to survive. …
